Wedding Veil Whimsy
print this article (plain-text)
As always, as I finished making one of my beautiful veils for my eagerly awaiting bride’s upcoming wedding the same question came to mind. What is this fascination with the wedding veil? This one question always continues to press my mind whereas I often come up with several responses: is it because the veil represents purity or do brides want their veil to flow in the wind or is it perhaps their mother would disown them if they did not wear one. I cannot think of one single attire worn by women that stirs up emotions and lets us not forget that the veil is one of the oldest wedding traditions that remains virtually true to its origin.
To understand the wedding veil’s significant and symbolic meaning I took a walk down the road of “history”. In a nutshell, I realized that there are numerous explanations as to the significance and symbolic meaning of the wedding veil. According to Wikipedia, the first recorded veiling for women is noted in an Assyrian legal text from the 13th century BCE, which restricted its use to noble women and forbade prostitutes and common women from adopting it. Whatever lies in its historical meaning the question remains the same, what is this fascination? Many brides explain that without the veil they feel incomplete but I always thought that the wedding dress was the final completion for brides. Imagine this, as one bride said to me; presenting a birthday cake to a seven year old child without any candles on it for him/her to blow out. Can you see the cake is not truly complete without the candles? Oh, now I get it.
Being a veil designer I have created many beautiful and unusual veils for my brides. I have witnessed appreciation and delight when I present their veils to them. I have seen tears and relief at the sight of their beloved veil.
